Brown widow spiders are less familiar to many Australians than redbacks, but they are useful to include because they share the widow-spider body shape and messy sheltered web style. A rounded brown or patterned spider in a tangled dry web should be compared with redbacks and cupboard spiders before any handling; colour alone is not enough because several comb-footed house spiders look similar.
